INFP vs INTP: How to Tell Them Apart | OnType (preview)

INFP vs INTP

Which one fits you?

If you relate to both, you are not alone. These two share a lot, so look at the reasons behind what you do.

Quick answer

INFPs tend to start from what feels right to them. INTPs tend to start from whether something makes sense to them. That is the difference between an Introverted Feeling (Fi) Hero and an Introverted Thinking (Ti) Hero: the function each type leads with.

At a glance

The differences worth looking for

Every type uses all eight cognitive functions, each in a different position. The position shows how much attention and confidence a type tends to give that function. Greyed rows are the same for both types.

Ni introverted intuition, Ne extraverted intuition, Fi introverted feeling, Fe extraverted feeling, Ti introverted thinking, Te extraverted thinking, Si introverted sensing, Se extraverted sensing.

Shared by both, so give these less weight:
  • 4 of 8 positions match, including Ne Parent, Si Child, Ni Critic, Se Trickster
  • Informative: both tend to give background and context first
  • Responding: both tend to reply rather than start conversations, and may need quiet time after socializing
  • Outcome: both tend to focus on order and the intended result
  • 3 shared letters, so a four-letter result alone may not separate them

How to decide

Compare the reasons behind what you do

  1. 1

    Recall a real decision

Think of a recent choice, disagreement, or conversation. What did you notice first, and what did you need before deciding?

  2. 2

    Look past the behaviour

Both types can plan, care, reason, and act. Ask why you did it, not just what you did.

  3. 3

    Check across your life

Look at work, friendships, and time alone. Consider what comes easily, what takes effort, and what you tend to overlook.

Also worth knowing: family, culture, and job expectations can shape how you behave, so answer for who you are when no one needs anything from you. And you do not have to be one of these two. If neither fits, take the free test and compare other types too.

The core difference

Fi Hero vs Ti Hero

Their Hero functions differ. The Hero is the function a type leads with and relies on most for everyday problem-solving.

Picture being asked to sign off on a decision you are unsure about. An INFP is likely to ask first, Does this feel right to me? An INTP is more likely to ask, Does this make sense to me? Either type can ask both. What matters is which question comes first.

INFP · Introverted Feeling (Fi) Hero

Fi is the heart turned inward.

  • Values what matters most to you
  • Morals your own sense of good and bad
  • Self-worth how good you judge yourself to be
  • Authenticity living by your own principles

“I just don't feel right doing that.”A personal sense of right and wrong, felt before it's explained.

INTP · Introverted Thinking (Ti) Hero

Ti is the mind turned inward.

  • Logic reasoning things through yourself
  • Accuracy a personal true/false judgment
  • Processing working a problem out step by step
  • Independence reaching your own conclusions

“That doesn't make sense to me yet.”A personal true/false check, run before accepting an answer.

Function pairs

How their functions work together

Each function has an opposite-facing partner: Fi and Fe, Ni and Ne, Si and Se, Ti and Te. Where a type holds each side says a lot about what comes easily and what takes more work. Only the pairs where these two types differ are shown.

01 How they handle feelings and values

INFP

Fi Hero + Fe Nemesis

INFPs lead with their own morals and sense of good and bad. They can worry about how caring they are and whether other people are good.

Growth for an INFP can mean helping others and accepting that different values do not make people worse.

INTP

Fe Aspirational + Fi Demon

INTPs may feel unsure about making others feel good in social situations, yet want to contribute. Under strong stress, they can struggle with their own feelings and sense of worth.

Growth for an INTP can mean expressing feelings in healthy ways before they build up.

02 How they handle logic and evidence

INFP

Te Aspirational + Ti Demon

INFPs may feel uncertain about their beliefs and how others see them, yet want to get them right. Under strong stress, they can lose respect for themselves and others when they feel unvalued.

Growth for an INFP can mean recognizing that they are respectable, which makes it easier to respect others.

INTP

Ti Hero + Te Nemesis

INTPs lead with internal logic, working out for themselves what is true. They can worry about whether other people's thinking holds up, and about their own reputation.

Growth for an INTP can mean listening to others, accepting criticism, and making peace with embarrassment.

Common mix-ups

Stereotypes that lead people astray

Are INFPs emotional and INTPs logical?

Both types think and feel. INFPs lead with a judgment about values (Fi); INTPs lead with a judgment about logic (Ti). Neither is more rational overall.

Does crying easily mean I use Fi?

No. Fi is a personal sense of right and wrong. Emotional expression varies from person to person.

Does seeming detached mean I use Ti?

Not necessarily. Ti is about working out what is true for yourself. Many Ti users are warm and engaged.

Can an INFP be good at logic?

Yes. INFPs hold Te Aspirational, a real pull toward evidence and well-founded beliefs, even if it feels uncertain at first.

All eight positions

Side by side, Hero to Demon

The first four positions form the ego: the functions a type uses most consciously. The last four form the shadow, which tends to show up as worry, criticism, blind spots, or reactions under stress.

Look closer at INFP if…

  • When you face a decision, your first question is usually Does this feel right to me?
  • You take real care with possibilities, consequences, and what others want. Think of a time this shaped a choice you made.
  • You bring natural, optimistic energy to memory, loyalty, and personal needs.
  • In conversation you usually give background and context so others can reach the conclusion, and you tend to respond rather than start.
  • You can be critical of your own goals and plans, and may overlook others' comfort and how your actions affect them.

FAQ

Common questions

What is the main difference between INFP and INTP?

INFPs tend to start from what feels right to them. INTPs tend to start from whether something makes sense to them. That is the difference between an Introverted Feeling (Fi) Hero and an Introverted Thinking (Ti) Hero: the function each type leads with.

Why do INFPs and INTPs get confused so often?

They share three letters, the same interaction style (Background), and the same perceiving functions in the same positions (Ne Parent, Si Child, Ni Critic, Se Trickster). The difference sits in their judging functions.

Can an INTP care about ethics?

Yes. INTPs hold Fe Aspirational, which is drawn to ethics and to making others feel good, even when it feels less certain.

What if I relate to both INFP and INTP?

Focus on your first instinct: when something bothers you, do you feel it is wrong before you can explain why (Fi), or do you spot the flaw in the reasoning first (Ti)?

Are INFPs and INTPs compatible?

They share an interaction style and often understand each other's need for space. The compatibility chart shows how OnType classifies the pair.

What if neither type fits?

That is useful information too. Keep other types in consideration, take the free OnType test, and compare the functions behind any types you relate to.
