INFJ vs ENFJ: How to Tell Them Apart | OnType (preview)

INFJ vs ENFJ

Which one fits you?

If you relate to both, you are not alone. These two share a lot, so look at the reasons behind what you do.

Quick answer

INFJs tend to start from what they want and where things are heading. ENFJs tend to start from how the people around them feel. That is the difference between an Introverted Intuition (Ni) Hero and an Extraverted Feeling (Fe) Hero: the function each type leads with.

At a glance

The differences worth looking for

Every type uses all eight cognitive functions, each in a different position. The position shows how much attention and confidence a type tends to give that function. Greyed rows are the same for both types.

Ni introverted intuition, Ne extraverted intuition, Fi introverted feeling, Fe extraverted feeling, Ti introverted thinking, Te extraverted thinking, Si introverted sensing, Se extraverted sensing.

Shared by both, so give these less weight:
  • Same four ego functions (Fe, Ni, Se, Ti), in a different order
  • Idealist temperament: both are abstract, affiliative, interest
  • Direct: both tend to keep explanations short and get to the point
  • 3 shared letters, so a four-letter result alone may not separate them

How to decide

Compare the reasons behind what you do

  1. 1

    Recall a real decision

Think of a recent choice, disagreement, or conversation. What did you notice first, and what did you need before deciding?

  2. 2

    Look past the behaviour

Both types can plan, care, reason, and act. Ask why you did it, not just what you did.

  3. 3

    Check across your life

Look at work, friendships, and time alone. Consider what comes easily, what takes effort, and what you tend to overlook.

Also worth knowing: family, culture, and job expectations can shape how you behave, so answer for who you are when no one needs anything from you. And you do not have to be one of these two. If neither fits, take the free test and compare other types too.

The core difference

Ni Hero vs Fe Hero

Their Hero functions differ. The Hero is the function a type leads with and relies on most for everyday problem-solving.

Picture a friend group planning a trip when one person seems unhappy with the plan. An ENFJ is likely to notice first, How is everyone feeling about this? An INFJ also cares, but is more likely to start with Where is this heading, and what do I want from it? Both types use both functions. The difference is which one leads.

INFJ · Introverted Intuition (Ni) Hero

Ni is fire.

  • Passion a deep inner drive
  • Vision seeing the future you want
  • Willpower focus and tenacity
  • Desire knowing what you want

“I want to start my own business one day.”A personal want, aimed at your own future.

ENFJ · Extraverted Feeling (Fe) Hero

Fe is the heart turned outward.

  • Empathy attention to how others feel
  • Ethics shared standards of right and wrong
  • Care contributing to others' well-being
  • Social norms how a choice lands with the group

“I don't want anyone to feel left out of this.”Attention to how a decision affects other people.

Function pairs

How their functions work together

Each function has an opposite-facing partner: Fi and Fe, Ni and Ne, Si and Se, Ti and Te. Where a type holds each side says a lot about what comes easily and what takes more work. Only the pairs where these two types differ are shown.

01 How they handle feelings and values

INFJ

Fe Parent + Fi Critic

INFJs take careful responsibility for ethics and how others feel, while being selective about whom they empathize with. They can be hard on themselves about their self-worth and how good a person they are.

Growth for an INFJ can mean holding themselves to a realistic standard of goodness, and using truth rather than pessimism to judge their character.

ENFJ

Fe Hero + Fi Nemesis

ENFJs lead with others' feelings, using empathy and ethics to care for people. They can worry about their self-worth and whether they are good enough.

Growth for an ENFJ can mean developing personal values and learning to value themselves.

02 How they look ahead

INFJ

Ni Hero + Ne Nemesis

INFJs lead with personal wants and willpower, using them to choose a direction. They can worry about others' intentions and their own desirability.

Growth for an INFJ can mean giving people the benefit of the doubt rather than assuming poor intentions.

ENFJ

Ni Parent + Ne Critic

ENFJs apply their wants and willpower carefully, aiming for responsible choices about the future. They can be critical of others' intentions and may expect the worst.

Growth for an ENFJ can mean understanding how others make decisions before judging their intentions.

03 How they handle needs and the here and now

INFJ

Se Aspirational + Si Demon

INFJs may feel unsure about their performance and physical skills, yet want to improve them. Under strong stress, they can react intensely to disloyalty or broken commitments.

Growth for an INFJ can mean forgiving, keeping expectations of loyalty realistic, and looking after their own comfort.

ENFJ

Se Child + Si Trickster

ENFJs enjoy giving others good experiences, though they can sometimes overdo it. They may overlook their own needs, comfort, and well-being.

Growth for an ENFJ can mean borrowing routines from disciplined people and keeping track of their own well-being.

04 How they handle logic and evidence

INFJ

Ti Child + Te Trickster

INFJs bring natural, optimistic energy to logic, though they can be overconfident in their reasoning. They may overlook how others see them and whether their sources are reliable.

Growth for an INFJ can mean learning from people who check sources carefully and read public opinion well.

ENFJ

Ti Aspirational + Te Demon

ENFJs may doubt their own intelligence at times, yet can become careful critical thinkers. Under strong stress, they can stop listening when they feel unheard.

Growth for an ENFJ can mean listening actively and trusting their own intelligence without needing validation.

Common mix-ups

Stereotypes that lead people astray

Are ENFJs just outgoing INFJs?

No. ENFJs lead with Fe (others' feelings); INFJs lead with Ni (personal wants and direction). That is a different starting point, not a volume setting.

Does being a good listener mean I am an INFJ?

Any type can listen well. INFJs are Responding types who tend to reply rather than start; ENFJs are Initiating types. Both can listen carefully.

Are ENFJs always the life of the party?

No. Fe Hero is about reading and caring for how people feel, which can look like quiet attentiveness as easily as enthusiasm.

Does becoming more confident turn an INFJ into an ENFJ?

No. Confidence can grow in any type. Ni Hero and Fe Hero remain different starting points.

All eight positions

Side by side, Hero to Demon

The first four positions form the ego: the functions a type uses most consciously. The last four form the shadow, which tends to show up as worry, criticism, blind spots, or reactions under stress.

Look closer at INFJ if…

  • When you face a decision, your first question is usually Where is this heading, and what do I want from it?
  • You take real care with others' feelings and shared ethics. Think of a time this shaped a choice you made.
  • You bring natural, optimistic energy to internal logic and what makes sense.
  • In conversation you usually keep things short and get to the point, and you tend to respond rather than start.
  • You can be critical of your own worth and goodness, and may overlook how others see you and whether your sources are reliable.

FAQ

Common questions

What is the main difference between INFJ and ENFJ?

INFJs tend to start from what they want and where things are heading. ENFJs tend to start from how the people around them feel. That is the difference between an Introverted Intuition (Ni) Hero and an Extraverted Feeling (Fe) Hero: the function each type leads with.

Can an INFJ lead?

Yes. Ni Hero gives INFJs direction and willpower. They tend to lead from a vision, while ENFJs tend to lead by attending to the group.

Can an ENFJ be introspective?

Yes. ENFJs hold Ni Parent, which applies their wants carefully to responsible choices. They simply tend to check on the group first.

What if I relate to both INFJ and ENFJ?

Both are Direct communicators, so focus elsewhere: do you start from your own direction (Ni) or from the group's feelings (Fe)? And do you tend to respond (INFJ) or start conversations (ENFJ)?

Are INFJs and ENFJs compatible?

They share the same four ego functions in a different order. The compatibility chart shows how OnType classifies the pair and explains what those classifications mean.

What if neither type fits?

That is useful information too. Keep other types in consideration, take the free OnType test, and compare the functions behind any types you relate to.
