INFJ vs INTJ: How to Tell Them Apart | OnType (preview)

INFJ vs INTJ

Which one fits you?

If you relate to both, you are not alone. These two share a lot, so look at the reasons behind what you do.

Quick answer

Both INFJs and INTJs lead with Introverted Intuition (Ni): they tend to start from what they want and where things are heading. The difference usually shows next. INFJs take careful responsibility for how people feel (Extraverted Feeling, Fe, as Parent). INTJs take careful responsibility for evidence and sources (Extraverted Thinking, Te, as Parent).

The differences worth looking for

Every type uses all eight cognitive functions, each in a different position. The position shows how much attention and confidence a type tends to give that function. Greyed rows are the same for both types.

Ni introverted intuition, Ne extraverted intuition, Fi introverted feeling, Fe extraverted feeling, Ti introverted thinking, Te extraverted thinking, Si introverted sensing, Se extraverted sensing.

Shared by both, so give these less weight:
  • Same Hero (Ni): both lead with personal wants and future direction
  • 4 of 8 positions match, including Se Aspirational, Ne Nemesis, Si Demon
  • Direct: both tend to keep explanations short and get to the point
  • Responding: both tend to reply rather than start conversations, and may need quiet time after socializing
  • Progression: both tend to focus on keeping things moving toward completion
  • 3 shared letters, so a four-letter result alone may not separate them

How to decide

Compare the reasons behind what you do

  1. 1

    Recall a real decision

Think of a recent choice, disagreement, or conversation. What did you notice first, and what did you need before deciding?

  2. 2

    Look past the behaviour

Both types can plan, care, reason, and act. Ask why you did it, not just what you did.

  3. 3

    Check across your life

Look at work, friendships, and time alone. Consider what comes easily, what takes effort, and what you tend to overlook.

Also worth knowing: family, culture, and job expectations can shape how you behave, so answer for who you are when no one needs anything from you. And you do not have to be one of these two. If neither fits, take the free test and compare other types too.

The core difference

Fe Parent vs Te Parent

They share the same Hero, so the clearest difference is the Parent: the function each type takes the most responsibility for.

Picture a team choosing between two plans. Both types may start with Where is this heading, and what do I want from it? The difference often shows next. An INFJ tends to check, How will this affect the people involved? An INTJ tends to check, What do the evidence and sources say?

INFJ · Extraverted Feeling (Fe) Parent

Fe is the heart turned outward.

  • Empathy attention to how others feel
  • Ethics shared standards of right and wrong
  • Care contributing to others' well-being
  • Social norms how a choice lands with the group

“I don't want anyone to feel left out of this.”Attention to how a decision affects other people.

INTJ · Extraverted Thinking (Te) Parent

Te is the mind turned outward.

  • Evidence data, statistics, and sources
  • Rationale reasons other people can check
  • Belief what is reasonable to accept
  • Efficiency what actually works

“What do the sources actually say?”A check against outside evidence before settling on a belief.

Function pairs

How their functions work together

Each function has an opposite-facing partner: Fi and Fe, Ni and Ne, Si and Se, Ti and Te. Where a type holds each side says a lot about what comes easily and what takes more work. Only the pairs where these two types differ are shown.

01 How they handle feelings and values

INFJ

Fe Parent + Fi Critic

INFJs take careful responsibility for ethics and how others feel, while being selective about whom they empathize with. They can be hard on themselves about their self-worth and how good a person they are.

Growth for an INFJ can mean holding themselves to a realistic standard of goodness, and using truth rather than pessimism to judge their character.

INTJ

Fi Child + Fe Trickster

INTJs have a genuine, optimistic sense of their own values, though they can overrate their own goodness. They may overlook others' feelings and social norms.

Growth for an INTJ can mean learning social norms and ethics from people who attend to them.

02 How they handle logic and evidence

INFJ

Ti Child + Te Trickster

INFJs bring natural, optimistic energy to logic, though they can be overconfident in their reasoning. They may overlook how others see them and whether their sources are reliable.

Growth for an INFJ can mean learning from people who check sources carefully and read public opinion well.

INTJ

Te Parent + Ti Critic

INTJs take a careful, skeptical approach to beliefs, wanting data and sources before accepting them. They can be overly critical of their own reasoning.

Growth for an INTJ can mean checking their reasoning without doubting their intelligence.

Common mix-ups

Stereotypes that lead people astray

Are INFJs emotional and INTJs cold?

No. INFJs hold Fe Parent, which takes responsibility for how others feel. INTJs hold Fi Child, a genuine sense of their own values, with Fe in the Trickster position. Both have feelings; they attend to different ones.

Does being logical mean I am an INTJ?

Not on its own. INFJs hold Ti Child and can reason well. INTJs hold Te Parent, which leans on evidence and sources. The question is which kind of thinking you rely on.

Does caring about people mean I am an INFJ?

Any type can care. Fe Parent is narrower: a steady sense of responsibility for ethics and how others feel, which shows up in everyday choices.

Are INTJs just blunt INFJs?

Both are Direct communicators. The difference is what they check after their Ni sets a direction: INFJs check how people will feel; INTJs check the evidence.

All eight positions

Side by side, Hero to Demon

The first four positions form the ego: the functions a type uses most consciously. The last four form the shadow, which tends to show up as worry, criticism, blind spots, or reactions under stress.

Look closer at INFJ if…

  • When you face a decision, your first question is usually Where is this heading, and what do I want from it?
  • You take real care with others' feelings and shared ethics. Think of a time this shaped a choice you made.
  • You bring natural, optimistic energy to internal logic and what makes sense.
  • In conversation you usually keep things short and get to the point, and you tend to respond rather than start.
  • You can be critical of your own worth and goodness, and may overlook how others see you and whether your sources are reliable.

FAQ

Common questions

What is the main difference between INFJ and INTJ?

Both INFJs and INTJs lead with Introverted Intuition (Ni): they tend to start from what they want and where things are heading. The difference usually shows next. INFJs take careful responsibility for how people feel (Extraverted Feeling, Fe, as Parent). INTJs take careful responsibility for evidence and sources (Extraverted Thinking, Te, as Parent).

Can an INFJ be blunt?

Yes. Both INFJs and INTJs are Direct communicators. Fe Parent shapes what an INFJ pays attention to, not whether they speak plainly.

Can an INTJ be warm?

Yes. INTJs hold Fi Child, which gives them a genuine sense of personal values. Fe is in their Trickster position, so group feelings and social norms may get less automatic attention.

What if I relate to both INFJ and INTJ?

Since they share Ni Hero, focus on what you check next: how people will feel (Fe), or what the evidence says (Te)? Also compare your Critic: INFJs tend to be hard on their own worth (Fi Critic), INTJs on their own reasoning (Ti Critic).

Are INFJs and INTJs compatible?

They share Ni Hero, which the owner's compatibility model treats as a point where two people can compete over direction rather than help each other plan. The compatibility chart shows how every pair is classified.

What if neither type fits?

That is useful information too. Keep other types in consideration, take the free OnType test, and compare the functions behind any types you relate to.
